Reality TV star Kim Kardashian is filing for divorce from basketball player Kris Humphries after just 72 days of marriage.

Kardashian today released a statement confirming the divorce.

"After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage," she said. "I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision. I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don't work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best."

TMZ published legal papers this morning.

Despite the short marriage Kim is not seeking an annulment. She cites "irreconcilable differences" as the reason behind the split.

The date for their separation has been listed as today, October 31 (November 1 NZT).

Kris said in a statement: "I love my wife and am devastated to learn she filed for divorce. I'm committed to this marriage and everything this covenant represents. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it work."

Kim's sister, Kourtney, tweeted this morning about the divorce proceedings. "Our sister is going through a difficult time but we're a close family and are sticking together like always," she wrote. "We appreciate everyone's kindness and support.@KimKardashian, we love you."

The youngest Kardashian sister, Khloe, also joined the discussion on Twitter.

" Reading some these comments r so hurtful. Im grateful 4our fans who understand & r being respectful. Hate is disgusting. Love is everything," she wrote.

"Thank God for family. We are strong and we will only become closer! I love YOU"

Rumours of trouble in their marriage have been publicised for some time.

Kim was photographed alone at a Halloween party she was hosting in New York on Saturday. She said at the time that Kris had flown home to see his family in Minnesota.

The couple have a prenuptial agreement and Kim has hired attorney Laura Wasser to represent her. Laura has plenty of practice with high-profile celebrity break-ups. She has previously represented stars including Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie and Ryan Reynolds.

Kim and Kris were married on August 20 in a lavish ceremony in Montecito, California. It has been reported the nuptials cost a staggering US$10 million.
