Heartthrob Johnny Depp and long-term love Vanessa Paradis are splitting up after months of speculation about their 14-year relationship.

In a statement from the Hollywood star's publicist, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor confirmed the news.

"Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis have amicably separated," Entertainment Tonight revealed.

"Please respect their privacy and, more importantly, the privacy of their children."

Depp, 49, and the French actress have two children together; Lily-Rose, 12, and son Jack, 10.

Paradis recently told Stylist magazine that she had a "problem with the term soulmates."

"It's such a strong statement - it's like a marriage contract. I believe in love, and I want to believe that it lasts forever," she said.

"Love hurts and burns. This is why it's so powerful - it's such a universal feeling. Everyone knows it."
