Election campaigns in the United States may seem a bit over the top for a lot of New Zealanders. Millions of dollars are raised and spent, attacks on the rival are harsh and sometimes dirty, and then there's never a shortage of celebrities piping up and supporting their candidate.

While the US is voting today, we're looking back at the best celebrity endorsements this time around. We tried to be balanced, but, sorry, Mitt, celebrities just are not that into you.

Avengers director Joss Whedon is pondering while doing the dishes how a world with Mitt Romney as president would look like.

"It's a very different world now, and Mitt Romney is a very different candidate, one with the vision and determination to cut through business-as-usual politics and finally put this country back on the path to the zombie apocalypse."

Superstar Madonna, on the other side, had a less subtle approach. During a concert in Washington she gave a shout-out to the 'black Muslim in the White House" - which she later explained was her sarcastic way of showing support.

Girls' Lena Dunham took a more senstive and seductive approach to the whole voting thing. Because, you know, "your first time shouldn't be with just anybody, you wanna do it with a great guy. It should be with a guy with beautiful ... Someone who really cares about and understands women."

To be fair, it's not that Romney didn't get any celebrity support during the US election. There was Clint Eastwood and his chair.

Meat Loaf took to serenading the nation and expressed his support for the GOP candidate because "The man needs to understand Putin and Russia. So I want you to know that there is one man who will stand tall in this country and fight the storm and bring the United States back to what it should be -- Gov. Mitt Romney!"

Then there's The Man Chuck Norris who, while holding his wife's hand, warns his fellow evangelical Christians not to let allow their country to be blown up by 'socialism or something much worse." Whatever that may be. Aliens?

Chris Rock is addressing undecided white people:

Rock Star Kid Rock got behind his man Mitt by apologising that's he's not into Obama no more.

In the Democrats' corner there's also Cee Lo Green who re-wrote his runaway hit F**k You for Obama.

Cher and Kathy Griffin step up for their sisters, warning that "Romney and his buddies are trying to turn back time on women's rights."

Samuel L. Jackson's got a true-to-his-style message for Barack Obama supporters in the so-called "enthusiasm gap:" Wake the F**k up!

And last but not least, here's one for Romney. The Simpsons' Mr Burns shows his support for Mitt and his concern that one dog may come into the way of the GOP candidate taking the presidency.
