Johnny Knoxville was detained by police after he brought a grenade into Los Angeles International Airport.
The Jackass star was held by authorities after a scanner detected the inactive bomb in his carry on luggage.
After officers confirmed there was no explosive components or firing pin, Johnny - real name Philip John Clapp - was allowed to board his flight to Miami.
Police Sergeant Jim Holcomb said: "He told police it was a prop from a photo shoot and he completely forgot it was in his bag."
The prankster - who shot to fame for his wild stunts on the hit US show - was said to be very cooperative throughout the incident and apologised for the misunderstanding.
Prosecutors are yet to decide if the 38-year-old star will be charged for carrying the prohibited item.
This is not the first time Johnny has found himself on the wrong side of the law.
In 2007, an actor filed a lawsuit against the star for failing to pay him a promised US$10 million for putting his penis in a mousetrap.
