Amanda Bynes has reportedly been "talking to herself in unintelligible sentences" for months.

The 27-year-old former actress is currently under a 5150 hold after she set a fire in a residential driveway Monday night.

The California legislation sees those deemed by authorities to be a danger to themselves and others forced into hospital to have their mental state evaluated for up to 72 hours.

It is rumoured medical professionals have requested an extension to the three-day evaluation period as they believe the star is suffering from schizophrenia.

Bynes has been embroiled in a number of bizarre situations recently. She has lived in countless apartment buildings and hotels since moving to New York City in 2012.

Apparently neighbours often heard her walking in communal areas speaking a "nonsensical" language.

"When she was living at her apartment near New York's Times Square, neighbours spotted her wandering the halls and talking to herself in unintelligible sentences," a source told Radar Online.

This symptomatic behaviour supposedly began during Bynes' professional heyday in the late 1990s, when she was starring on Nickelodeon teen sketch comedy show All That.

It is rumoured people were often taken aback by  Bynes' strange rituals.

"When she was a teenager, Amanda would cover electronic items inside her home because she thought that was the only way she wouldn't be spied on," an insider revealed.

Bynes has vehemently denied drug use in the past, but it has been said that she is a habitual marijuana smoker.

Apparently loved ones believe weed only exacerbates her supposed mental health problems.

"It makes her more paranoid and instead of mellowing her out, it does the opposite," the source said. "Amanda begins talking faster and just can't seem to sit still."

According to Radar Online, her mother Lynn Organ and father Rick Bynes are due in court on Friday to formally ask for legal conservatorship over their daughter.

Bynes won't face charges for the Thousand Oaks fire, but she is still on the hook in both California and New York for five crimes which include driving under the influence, driving on a suspended licence, tampering with evidence, reckless endangerment and marijuana possession.
