Ryan Seacrest thought Jeff Tambor was in 'Ghost'

Former American Idol host Ryan Seacrest has made a massive blunder on live television - mistaking Jeffrey Tambor for a dead actor.

Tambor made the appearance on US talk show Live with Kelly and Ryan, promoting his new memoir Are You Anybody? with hosts Kelly Ripa and Seacrest.

Tambor's long and very successful acting career includes roles in TV series The Larry Sanders Show, Arrested Development and Transparent as well as playing the voice over for King Neptune in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.

This is NOT Jeff Tambor. This is Vincent Schiavelli.

After listing Tambor's achievements, Seacrest made the fatal error every interviewer fears: mistaking him for the wrong person.

"We talked about the things you have done and are doing, but to me, you're the scary guy on the subway in Ghost," Seacrest declared.

Tambor gracefully took on Seacrest's error, letting him down gently - but with dripping with sarcasm.

"Oh, this is horrible," he said."You're gonna be embarrassed. That's not me."

Seacrest squirmed and stuttered in his seat, and appeared to be confused as to who really was the scary guy on the subway in Ghost. "How are ya doing, you alright?" Tambor then asked Seacrest.

It was, in fact, Vincent Schiavelli in the scene from Ghost, an actor who died in 2005.

"But you're still here," Ripa screeched, trying to nervously cover for her co-host.

The audiences roared in laughter and Tambor played up to the faux pas.

"What is wrong with you? I came on to sell a book, not be insulted," he said. "I am hurt. My reps are here and we are filing an action suit. I came on in good faith."

It wasn't the first time Tambor had been mistaken for the Ghost actor.

A waiter in Rome came up to him, threw down his napkin, and yelled out at Tambor: "get off my train".

"And I had no idea what he was talking about," Tambor said.

He went on to joke that his wife even thought he was Schiavelli, and they had gotten married anyway.
