Unexpected celeb hook-ups and break-ups
Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta Jones: Are they or aren’t they busted for good? The jury’s out, but the August separation of one of Hollywood’s long-serving romances was a surprise to many.
Miranda Kerr & Orlando Bloom: Who would have guessed that the couple that meditates together couldn’t stay together? No amount of Noni juice could stop the Angel and the Elf from drifting apart, and they called time in late-October.
Leonardo DiCaprio & Toni Garrn: As of December, the latest model (get it) in Leo's life still seems to be the blonde Victoria’s Secret babe he hooked up with in May, though word on the street is the Wolf Of Wall Street star was seen pashing a mystery brunette in Miami…
Courtney Stodden & Doug Hutchison: The world shrugged when the 51-year-old former-Green Mile star’s teen bride decided she needed to break free from her creepy-looking husband. No word yet on whether that means there'll be fewer paparazzi opps in 2014, though.
Bradley Cooper & Suki Waterhouse: Age ain’t nothin’ but a number to the American Hustle star, 38, who in February started “hanging out” with the 21-year-old British model. They were later snapped reading Lolita in a park.
Leighton Meester & Adam Brody: It was a former teen soapie star spectacular when The O.C’s Seth and Gossip Girl’s Blair started dating this year; they became engaged in November.
Henry Cavill & Kaley Cuoco: Eyebrows were raised worldwide when Superman hooked up with Big Bang Theory’s Penny in June; the pair were snapped hiking and shopping, and then just like that, it went out with a, well, big bang.
Taylor Swift & Harry Styles: These tween favourites get a vote in both the hookup column (they kicked things off with a kiss on NYE...) and the breakup column (...but it was all over three months later after a giant fight in the Virgin Islands).
Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth: Only they can truly say if it was the twerk that broke the camel’s back, but by September the Hunger Games star and the tongue-wagging former Disney princess had broken off their engagement.
Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson: Everyone’s favourite vampire romance took a stake to the heart when Stewart was spotted canoodling with her Snow White director, and was finally declared dead (not undead) in May.

Keeping track of who's dating (or dumping) who in Tinseltown is as dizzying as a coffee date with your friend whose tumultuous dating life makes Mills & Boon look like a minimalist text on frigitity: there are the couples that continually split and reconcile (rinse, repeat), the "greatest marriage ever" types whose inevitable divorce ruins everyone's belief in true love, and the weird hook-ups you never saw coming.
In terms of romance, 2013 gave us just as many life-affirming love affairs as it did heart crushing break-ups and head-scratching couplings.
Click through the gallery above to see some of the year's most notable couplings and uncouplings ...
