If she'd held off for a couple of days, TV host Rove McManus and his actress wife Tasma Walton might have called their new daughter Noel - or Holly.

But instead the baby girl was welcomed into the world before Christmas and her proud papa took to Facebook and Twitter on Saturday to share the first pictures of his first-born.

"Just after 9am Monday morning, I got this early Christmas present," he tweeted.

"Her name is Ruby."

Walton gave birth in Sydney a couple of weeks ahead of her January 2 due date.

"It's still hard to believe she's here," the actress said in a statement.

"It was love at first sight. She is a beautiful, life-changing bundle."

Rove added: "While she arrived slightly earlier than expected, she is healthy and more importantly it means she'll be here to spend Christmas with us, which is the best present you could wish for."

"I feel I have entered a new life that consists of mainly feeding and wiping. But I couldn't be happier."

The triple Gold Logie winner married Walton in June 2009.
