A man visiting his brother in Lyttelton inadvertently sent the hearts of many Cantabrians fluttering when he was mistaken for Hollywood star Johnny Depp.

PortHole Bar staff member Rebecca Dunlay said the mystery over whether the famous actor was in Christchurch was solved when she met a Depp lookalike named Paul in Lyttelton yesterday.

The Press received multiple reports yesterday that the Pirates of the Carribean star had been spotted in Christchurch.

"We'd been following the news all day . . . but we didn't believe it," Dunlay said.

A man came into her workplace yesterday afternoon declaring he had just had lunch with Depp at Freemans Dining Room across the road.

"I went up and got a picture with him and said come to the PortHole, so he did," Dunlay said.

"He's a really nice guy, but he's not Johnny Depp."

The man told her his name was Paul and he had come over from London to visit his brother in Lyttelton.

It was a "strange coincidence" that he looked so much like Depp, he told her.

"We told him that he was on the news a lot and he couldn't believe it."

It was not the first time the man had been compared to Depp though.

"He gets it all the time," Dunlay said.

Paul spent the rest of the afternoon at the PortHole Bar, even getting up on stage with a guitar for a rendition of Britpop band Oasis' Wonderwall as part of the bar's weekly open mic session.

"When you see him in person he's not that similar [to Depp]. It's the hairstyle, the moustache and the glasses definitely," Dunlay said.

"He's just a nice guy trying to enjoy his holiday."

Carol Beaumont said she met the Depp lookalike at Baretta in St Asaph St.

"He had a British accent and told us he had seven kids to seven mums which is a story the real Johnny Depp uses to confuse fans so he obviously gets recognised often if he knows to use this story," she said.

"He was really friendly though and let my friend and I take a pic with him."
