Hollywood actor Margot Robbie has passed on a $1000 prize won from a radio station to the Canterbury community where she is filming her latest movie.

The 23-year-old Australian actor arrived in New Zealand last week to begin filming science fiction tale Z for Zachariah in the small Banks Peninsula settlement of Port Levy.

Robbie - who most recently appeared in Oscar-nominated movie The Wolf of Wall Street - recently replaced American Amanda Seyfried to play the role of 16-year-old farmgirl Ann Burden, who believes she is the only survivor of a nuclear holocaust.

The film, based on a 1974 book of the same name, will also star Star Trek's Chris Pine and 12 Years a Slave's Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Z4Z Film Production line producer Murray Francis said he rang The Edge< radio station yesterday to claim a $1000 prize they were offering to anyone who could get Robbie to ring them.

He claimed the cash before handing the phone over to Robbie.

Robbie decided to donate half the money to the Port Levy volunteer fire brigade, and the remaining $500 to the Port Levy marae "who had been so warm and welcoming to the film and its cast and crew", Francis said.

The Edge will air its interview with Robbie at 5.15pm today.

Radio DJ Jay-Jay Feeney said the interview will feature Robbie talking about "dating Orlando Bloom, Leo diCaprio, being naked in a movie, how she has such a hot body and more".
