A blockbuster sci-fi movie which caricatures Nigerians as gangsters and cannibals and a Sony PlayStation advert which implies they are fraudsters have infuriated a government battling to improve the country's image.
South African film District 9, which has topped the UK box office for two straight weeks and ranked in the top 10 in North America, is an allegory on segregation and xenophobia, with alien life forms cooped up in a township set in Johannesburg.
None of the groups shown comes out particularly well, but the Nigerians are portrayed as gangsters, cannibals, pimps and prostitutes, while their leader's name is pronounced Obasanjo - the same as that of Nigeria's former president.
Nigeria has banned cinemas from showing the Peter Jackson-produced film.
"It is a Hollywood film, shot in South Africa and acted mainly by South Africans. We protested because it showed Nigeria in a very bad light," Information Minister Dora Akunyili, who is spearheading a "rebranding Nigeria" campaign, told Reuters.
"There is no country that does not have prostitutes and criminals but definitely most countries don't have cannibals, and we don't have cannibals in this country. We don't eat human flesh, it is definitely unacceptable," she said.
Akunyili said the government had told the Nigerian Film and Video Censor Board to ensure District 9 was no longer shown in movie theatres and to confiscate copies. It had also written to the producers telling them to edit out references to Nigeria.
'GOOD PEOPLE, GREAT NATION'
"We do not encourage censorship or government forcibly prescribing actions that infringe upon a consumer's right to choose," said Roy Murray Bruce, president of Silverbird Group, which owns one of the country's main cinema chains.
"However in this instance, Silverbird is fully behind the censorship board's ban on the movie because of its demeaning, crass and offensive misrepresentation of Nigeria and Nigerians."
The controversy comes as Africa's most populous nation seeks to shrug off its image as an epicenter of corruption, epitomised by "419" email fraudsters named after the article in Nigeria's penal code that deals with advance fee fraud.
In March, the government launched a rebranding campaign with the slogan: "Nigeria: Good People, Great Nation."
Even Nigeria's banking sector is being forced to clean up its act. The central bank last month removed the heads of five banks as part of a $2.6 billion bailout, before anti-corruption police brought charges against them including recklessly granting loans without due authorization.
District 9 has not been the only headache for Akunyili's rebranding campaign.
Sonyhad to edit an advert for its PlayStation 3 gaming console in which a customer asks the price, and was originally told: "You can't believe everything you read on the internet, otherwise I'd be a Nigerian millionaire by now."
"Why didn't Sony, for instance, use Japan? Japanese being criminals. Don't they have criminals in Japan," Akunyili said.
"In District 9, why didn't Hollywood use the criminals in New York? How many shootings do we have in a day in New York? Why didn't they use the name of their president or their former president? There is no way anybody can defend what they did."

@Teddy (#39) - Pointing out that other countries have crime too doesn't prove anything. It's the same tack the Nigerians took. The point is - hundreds of movies every year have "bad guy" characters from other countries. Their countries are likewise often identified - Americans, Russians, Germans, Chinese, British, South Africans, etc. No other country in the world gets all upset because some bad guys in movies are portrayed as citizens of their countries. One movie comes along with some Nigerian "bad guys" and it's suddenly it's "indiscriminate racism" and a case for the government to jump all over? My god. If every movie with a bad-guy with an identifiable nationality was banned... all we'd have is romantic comedies.
This movie was a perfect allegory. These people need to wake up! It was supposed to make you think, and see what other people are doing to other people. A hidden jem. @ Ash 34,that is incredibly shallow and stupid. Some movies arent just made for making money. Its obvious that they don't want to see it cause its true, just like the USA has all this hidden footage of stuff and 9/11 stuuff going on that was never released.
@ Ash #20 Ever heard of Heavenly Creatures? Jackson's REALISTIC movie about a REAL murder? Duh. And this movie is South African, not Hollywood. Nigeria should fix up its country, stop the scams, and THEN try to improve its image.
1.It's a well know fact that South Africa has a higher crime wave than Nigeria. If you doubt, I can send you pictures of daylight homicideson net in South Africa. 2. Also, America have alot of homicides and Gangstarism so also does Japan. 3. Some major countries (e.g Germany) have legalised prostitution. And some of these countries have recorded cases of cannibalism in the 20th Century.
So for District 9 appologists, this is a clear case of parochial mindedness and prejudice by the producers of District 9. I am yet to see Sony sponsor a film on the Atrocities of P.W. Botha and his vast international support team (Read - the roots of crisis in Souther African by Ann Seidmann of OXFAM America)and his Genocide campaign againt the rightful owners of the South African Land or one of the greatest Genocided in leaving memories of all times - Against the Aborigenes of Australia.
So wake up and think again.
dora was right, every country in the world has criminals, America been no1. i think obama or Clinton would av been the best name to be use here. and to those of u who think Nigerians are fraudsters, y dont u ask the victims how greedy they are? if ure not a corrupt person u cant fall victim to "419" so Nigeria don't owe anybody apology on that.
cant belive this... how many movies come out a year that portray americans as being the dirty bad guys... or russians for that matter.. one movie its the nigerians... get over yourself your county aint that great
Freedom of speach allows for anyone to say whatever he wants. The same Democracy that gives freedom of speach sets some limit.
GENERALISATION is a form of Ignorance; just imagine how fair it is to say AMERICANS are armed robbers, all SOUTH AFRICANS are HIV positive.
The country with highest number of Criminals is America which has the highest number of crime, why is there no film labelling AMERICA as criminal?
It is just unfurtunate and unfair that little number and percentage of 150 millions of Nigerians are making a bad name for Nigeria.
To any objective reader, it is not fair when only thousands define a million;
Statistically, 30% of something can not qualify that thing, in this case, the so called Nigerian scammers are just some few thousands less than 1% population of Nigeria; the 1% bad ones who use email tech to replicate 1 e-mail to thousands are making it look like they are many.
Nigerian government on the other hand (I know) is putting a lot of effort to stop such act in and from Nigeria, however, more effort has to be put in the fight against this bad eggs.
Please lets there be justice even within our mind and judgement.
Please let there be justice in this innocent world

If you can't trust the " Prince of Nigeria ", who can you trust ? Adolf Hitler ( spoof )
Maybe someone should ask this guy why his country is known worldwide for being scammers. I have yet to receive a scam email from Holland ? You would think if we all had criminals like that in abundance it would be more proportionate. Or let me guess " it the colonials fault " Any other answer than his country is full of lazy Nigerians who don't mind bringing shame to their country or race.
We all have those types of people living in each country, but hey when 90% of the scammers come from 1 country or race that's gotta say something .
This is sounding so familiar......
Haha ridiculous. I know of a particular African friend who also hates the movie. I think it's stupid... It's a movie for god sake. Get over yourselves, no one even cares. Did I ever think, oh poor Nigerians as I was watching the movie? No, I've got better things to do with my time than worry about such minor details. And another point, if Nigerians are so concerned with how they are portrayed to the rest of the world, then deal with your own people before you deal with other peoples perceptions of you. Idiots

Not all Americans are bad guys anymore than Nigerians are. As for why there are so many online frauds being from there.Try this one on for size. It is just as hard to catch those there as it is in America. The differances are Americans have more resourses to catch them than most other countries and we have the desire to punish them.
