Film review: New Moon

Now that television is screening Alan Ball's True Blood, the vampires in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga seem more anaemic than ever.
True Blood's vampires have sex. Twilight's brood about not having it - which for their fans, of course, is an integral part of their appeal. Meyer's hero, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), is a gentleman vampire. Having been brought up on animal blood, he's sworn off the human kind.
He and his mortal girlfriend, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), now dare to kiss but whenever they do, Edward quivers delicately, preserving the possibility that the smooch could suddenly deepen into a love bite.
New Moon finds Edward and Bella settling into life as high school sweethearts in Forks, Washington, although she's already worrying about future complications.
She wakes on her 18th birthday from a dream in which she has turned into her grandmother while 108-year-old Edward has remained his perennially youthful, undead self.
This scenario has become common. We've seen variations on the theme of time playing tricks in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Time Traveller's Wife and Dorian Gray. Welcome to the Botox generation's nightmare.
But we're not far into the story before Edward and the rest of his family decide they must leave Forks. Bella will not be going with them, he tells her.
Instead, she will stay behind to subside into a chronic sulk. This means no more than a slight adjustment to Stewart's performance, which is already arranged around her pronounced gift for slouching and mumbling, but the prospect of watching her carry a large chunk of the film without her co-star is far from enticing.
The film is more ponderous than the first one, which was directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Lords of Dogtown). Her successor, Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass), hasn't a clue.
For long stretches it seems Edward's sister, Alice (Ashley Greene), is the only member of the cast who has been licensed to laugh.
And while the high camp elements haven't been eliminated it's impossible to tell if Weitz can see them. Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) and his fellow wolf men are pretty funny, with their fondness for wandering bare-chested through the forest while lustily picking fights with one another, but I suspect that we're meant to take them seriously.
There is one thing to be said about the way Weitz handles time travel. He can make two hours and 10 minutes seem like a thousand years.

I found much of the music too overpowering for the scene. I found that the music was very complimentary to each scene in Twilight and was rather disappointed that Bella's lullaby was not played. I was also not fond of the in jokes which would only be realised by readers of the books and that they didn't develop story lines well. I don't think Chris Weintz was the right choice in director for this film as he lacked a real understanding of the characters and commercialised them too much
The movie was too terrible. Bella's character impressively missed every single emotional cue without fail, her body language going off on a tangent like a lost pup. The acting and mumbling was just bad, bad, bad. At one point in the meadow she hunches down like a gorilla with indigestion mistaking it for heartbreak. Very, very dissapointing. New Moon will cure many from the Twilight bug. For an antibiotic try Terry Goodkind's Seeker books - apparently excellent - better than Twilight opines my sister who was a rabid fan. Untill last night that is. Jakob and the Volturi gets kudos but Bella/Kirsten/scriptwriters/producers unfortunately killed it.
I perfectly agree with the sandra hall, for me there are some few kicks in the movie such as visual effects and sounds that were great improvement from the twilight, however Chris Weitz failed to capture the drama behind the story or should I say the giggle factor, for those who have read the book we are somehow disappointed but true in the twilight there's a lot of scenes that are not in book and yet Catherine made it look wonderful. I'm a great fan of stephanie meyer...I've read the whole collections down to breaking dawn...on the personal note may i appeal to the summit officials...bring back Catherine....
Definitely disagree with this review! New Moon was a huge improvement on Twilight, which at best encompassed the teenage angst and infatuation of the book but that was about it. Kristen Stewart has cut down on a lot of the pouting and stuttering that littered the first film and Weitz has stayed true to the story, which is more than I can say for Catherine Hardwike. Costuming, makeup, script, soundtrack and action scenes are all 100 times better as well. Even without com[paring it to the first film it was enjoyable and I would see it again. There is enough humour to break up the 'brooding' moments too. I may not have been as excited about it if I hadn't read the books, but even then, i would still recommend it! I'd say Sandra Hall is over the twilight phenomenon and this has tainted her review - which let's remember is actually just her opinion, and doesn't seem to reflect the view of the general public.
I liked the new moon book but the movie was pretty bad, none of them exept maybe taylor can act, it sounds like theyr all just reading lines directly from the script, i don't thnk its helped any by the fact that the dialog is largly taken from the book and wasn't writen by a proper screen writer. So it all just sounds like a really bad soap opera.

I disagree, im not sure if you watched the same movie as i did, but i have read New Moon numerous times and thought the movie was alot different than the book. I get that there needs to be dialogue rather than voice overs from Bella's perspective, but there were alot of differences such as the bit at one eyed pete's and how Jacob never goes to the high school in the beginning- these differences are just touching the surface. i personally believe that hardwicke did a fantastic job with twilight.. and that Weitz butchered New Moon.
I love the books, however the twilight movie did suck. What do you do right? I do agree with #26. I would love to see Rose kick ass in a movie. I love her character, Vampire academy is awesome!
LOL. No one in these films can act, so I'm not surprised at how horrible it was. At least Taylor Launter is a bit of eye candy.
saw it last night, loved it. the special effects were much better than in the first movie :D i loved all of it!
the storyline itself was a bit slow in parts-but it was the same in the book (think new moon was the most boring of the lot).
Dont know why some of you are saying the soundtrack was crap..i found it very similar to twilight.. didnt bother me at all.
Most disapointing part was lack of time spent on volturi (coz it was a big section in teh book) otherwise great.
heaps of funny parts too!

Awesome review Twilight saga is a joke anyway!
The actors/movies/books are terrible and Kristen really annoys me with her acting! (The eyes? and her mouth hanging open pretty much through out the whole film both T and NM??)I was very disappointed after watching NM, They try to be all lovely dovey but cant pull it off and once again the acting thing was really bad! One good thing the wolf pack were hot thanks to the effects lol
I agreed with #3 the books has a” terrible messages and themes for boys and girls" too much on the Lovey dovey side... I belong with you crap...Please make love to me before I turn into a vamp bs...Lol and yet Bella was still in "HIGH SCHOOL” and having a baby before she was even finished her school years? That’s hardly a “good” message! By the way I have read all 4 books and it was ridiculous... (He walks into the room and his beauty was almost painful...Lmao) I actually read one of her interviews and she said she had a dream about these characters, to be honest you cant really dream about the same thing every night...lol so im guessing most of the nights she will fantasize about these characters, also the books are tell from Bella’s side and when she was writing the books she will have to use the "I" statement as in she was Bella! Disgusting part is when you’re a mother of 3 your husband is sleeping next to you and your lying there dreaming/fantasizing about being in the meadow with a 17yr old vampire.lol hm
