Film review: Invictus

Morgan Freeman bought the rights to John Carlin's Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Changed a Nation, and asked Clint Eastwood, his great friend and collaborator, to usher a film adaptation into existence.
Eastwood's mana in Hollywood is so great that he could announce his intention to shoot the Los Angeles phone book and have the project green-lit by lunchtime.
Adapted as Invictus, the script tells the story of the months leading up to the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
Mandela was elected president of South Africa in 1994. He inherited a country that was still in parts savagely divided, and not just along racial lines.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was not universally popular with black South Africans, while many whites wanted to draw a line under the past and welcome the new republic.
The Rugby World Cup was intended to celebrate the new nation, but in reality, rugby was still almost exclusively a white game, and the Springboks were viewed by many as an unwelcome hangover from the apartheid era.
Mandela's policy was to align himself with the Springboks, and to transform the team into unlikely and often unwilling ambassadors for the rainbow nation. Walking on to the pitch wearing a Springbok jersey was Mandela's master stroke in a political and public-relations game that had been unfolding for months.
As Mandela, Freeman is astonishing - so good that for entire scenes I forgot that I was watching this most familiar actor, and started to treat the film as a documentary.
Opposite Freeman, Matt Damon makes a credible go of Springbok captain Francois Pienaar.
About the pack of chumps drafted in to play the All Blacks, probably the less said the better.
Eastwood directs the film with his usual unflashy, workmanlike, but intrusively sentimental style.
Invictus is a decent film of an intriguing footnote in South African history. One day I hope we get to see Freeman reprise the role in a film with more scope, ambition and flair.

Did Eastwood get the sequences wrong in the final match, the score is level 9-9 or 12-12(can't quite remember)and Pienaar gets them in a huddle for a pep talk 'we must defend as if our lives depend on it,defend defend defend'.What would be the point of defending if you're only drawing.

You are a tool.
It's hard to review any movie without commenting on its subject and message. I think that the move is not about the victory by Sth Africa over NZ but about how these two men from both sides of the political and cultural spectrum put aside their differences to pull Sth Africa together - a task that was considered impossible at the time.
They left out the meeting between Francois, Nelson & Andrew Mehrtens where thet conspired for Andrew to miss his attempted drop goal in extra time therefore giving The Boks the chance to slot their own droppie and thus unite South Africa forever
To the people criticising the lack of opinion in the review, I agree, you do have a point. The trouble is 'Invictus' is so competently done, that there really is little for a critic to comment on. Eastwood is a very workmanlike director, and he presents his story in very pragmatic fashion. It is as close to being documentary as a non-doco film ever gets to be. The more I looked for something to say other than that, the more the film evaded any critique. I'll stand by my comment that Eastwood is a sentimental director, and that occasionally weakens his films (Tho' in a movie like Gran Torino, a bit of sentimentality actually strengthens an otherwise bleak screenplay) Invictus does what it does very well, but it doesn't aim to do anymore than simply tell one story. I was disappointed that we finally get to see Morgan Freeman as Mandela - which is dream casting - but that the film that casting graces should be made on such a small scale. What a shame that no one can find a way to make the film of Mandela's autobiography 'A Long Walk To Freedom'. Thanks for reading and commenting on my reviews. I do occasionally drop into see how they are recieved. And no, no mention of food poisoning...that would have really buggered up the movies message! Cheers, GT
@ Rick #6. You're kidding right?
This review says almost nothing about the movie.
As one of a few Kiwis who didn't mourn when the AB's failed to win, I am interested in Invictus purely from the story's perspective. I'm also interested in Eastwood as the director here.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything other than the last five paragraphs (a few lines) about the movie itself.
Mandela is a convicted terrorist and a tedious old man. WHy we have to keep glorifying him I have no idea. I would expect better from Eastwood.
If you are reviewing a movie, then review it. Most people are not interested in your political interpretation of something you seem to know very little about.

When are we going to make a decent rugby movie? By rights we should.
