Shooting will start soon on a sequel to hit Kiwi comedy film Sione's Wedding.

Sione's Wedding - New Zealand's fifith highest-grossing film - was released in 2006 and starred Oscar Kightley, Madeleine Sami, David Fane and Robbie Magasiva.

Directed by Chris Graham, it followed the exploits of four misbehaving Samoan lads who were banned from their brother's wedding unless they had "serious" girlfriends to bring with them.

The sequel will begin shooting next month and will be directed by Simon Bennett in his first feature film, the NZ Herald reported.

"I thought it was pretty awesome just to do one. I never dreamed it would be possible to do a sequel," Kightley, who co-wrote both films along with James Griffin, told the Herald.

Sione's Wedding II is due for release on January 19.
