Taika Waititi shares first pics from Hunt for the Wilderpeople
The hunt is almost over.
A first look at actors Sam Neill and Julian Dennison, the stars of Taika Waititi's new film Hunt for the Wilderpeople, has been released.
Featuring the film's leads, city kid Ricky (Julian Dennison) and bushman Hec (Sam Neill), the image apparently shows the pair going head to head in the bush.
An adaptation of classic Kiwi novel Wild Pork and Watercress, by Barry Crump, Hunt for the Wilderpeople tells the story of misfit kid Ricky who is alone with his grumpy uncle Hec when his Aunt dies.
The unlikely duo evade child services and the law by going bush, where they must work together to survive despite their differences.
In an interview earlier in 2015, Waititi said the tone of Hunt was inspired by classic 1980s films of Kiwi directors like Roger Donaldson and Geoff Murphy.
"We're trying to do something accessible to everyone: we want this to be a film that families can go to and there's something for everyone," Waititi said.
"We want to spin a good yarn and have an adventure – and start a resurgence of entertaining New Zealand films, those adventure films like Came a Hot Friday and Goodbye Pork Pie – films where people are fighting against the system but in a fun way.
Of Hunt for the Wilder people, Waititi says people will "fall in love with these underdog characters".
"I don't think Sam or Julian had ever spent much time in the bush before so when you see them in this film you'll know they're really acting."
Hunt for the Wilderpeople is in post production and is due for release in early 2016.
