Violent gangsters take a modern-day family of cannibals hostage in a new Wellington horror flick.

The movie Fresh Meat will premiere at the Hawaii International Film Festival next month and is the debut feature film for director Danny Mulheron, who has also worked with Sir Peter Jackson on Meet the Feebles and A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Lover.

It stars Once Were Warriors actor Temuera Morrison as the head of a family of cannibals taken hostage by a gang after their prison break turns violent.

Producer Dave Gibson of the Gibson Group compared the film to Shaun of the Dead or Zombieland. He said it did not take itself too seriously and would appeal to younger, more mainstream audiences.

''It's quite an interesting film. It's cross-genre and very much what we see as a fun take on things. I think it's going to do well, we have done some test screenings and had really good responses to it.''

Mr Gibson warned it was probably not the kind of movie to take your grandmother to, and it would not answer life's pressing questions.

It was filmed in Wellington last year, mostly in Churton Park and at Avalon film studios, and has been produced by the Gibson Group and funded by the New Zealand Film Commission.

The Hawaii International Film Festival aims to showcase emerging films from Asia and the Pacific and top films from around the world. It runs from October 11 to 21.

Fresh Meat will be premiere in New Zealand on October 25.
