OPINION: Arbitrage (M) (100 min)

Directed by Nicholas Jarecki.

Starring Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Tim Roth.

Richard Gere's Wall Street titan watches the clock tick down on his life. His hedge fund faces ruin unless he can sign off on its sale.

That sale will never happen if his daughter - also his CFO - reveals that she knows the books are cooked, and then Gere's Robert Miller crashes a car, killing his mistress, and does a runner.

With the law, the lawyers, and the accountants all out to bring him down, Miller is facing what we can assume is going to be the longest week of his life.

Written and directed by Nicolas Jarecki - who is far better known for making documentaries than features - Arbitrage is a smart, literate, and immediately engrossing film.

Gere - always a leading man capable of transmitting intelligence and moral ambiguity - does career capping work here. Beside him Susan Sarandon and Tim Roth are more than able support.

Highly recommended.

Also on release is Kiwi comedy How to Meet Girls from a Distance (R13)(80 min), directed by Dean Hewison and Richard Falkner.

It screened in the New Zealand Film Festival. Shot in under three weeks, for a budget of $100,000, there's no way this could actually be a terrific little film with masses of audience appeal, right? Nope. How to Meet Girls from a Distance is an absolute ripper.
