A Wellington film has cracked the international market, despite not even being complete.

Director David Gould is currently at the Californian American Film Market, selling his Wellington-made movie The Cure internationally.

The film, which stars Antonia Prebble, Daniel Lissing, Stephen Lovatt, and John Bach, had been picked up by international film sales agency CineTel, he said.

''It's a huge deal actually ... they have done the deal from watching the trailer.''

The full film would not be completed till February or March, when a drive to push it in major markets such as the United States and England would begin.

However, on the strength of the trailer, it was already sold to Spain, Germany, Russia, and the Czech Republic.

''We were in a very fortunate position that several sales agents wanted to represent the film, but ultimately we chose CineTel because of their depth and breadth of experience,'' Gould said.

''They not only have a great reputation in the marketplace, but are also active film producers themselves, so they have their finger on the pulse as to what the market wants.''

CineTel had been selling films internationally for more than 30 years, while president and chief executive Paul Hertzberg chaired the Independent Film & Television Associations, which organises the American Film Market.

Hertzberg said he was ''blown away'' by The Cure.

''We're very optimistic that the film will perform beyond everyone's expectations.''

The film follows Beth, played by Prebble, a young, female scientist who discovers the pharmaceutical company she works for had developed a cure for cancer years earlier, and her battle to release it.
