Australian actress and comedian Rebel Wilson is set to host the MTV Movie Awards next April.

MTV made the announcement in a video sketch where she is interrogated by her Bridesmaids co-star Matt Lucas.

The actress tweeted "Uh huh, secret's out, I'm starring in the MTV Movie Awards in 2013 xx".

The show will air live from Los Angeles on April 14. It will be the first time an Australian has hosted the awards show.

The hosting gig has previously pulled big name comedians, including Russell Brand, Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, Jimmy Fallon and Ben Stiller.

Wilson shot to international stardom last year following her acclaimed performance in the comedy film Bridesmaids. She has since been in high demand and has appeared in a number of Hollywood films, including Pitch Perfect and Bachelorette.

The announcement has elicited enthusiastic responses from international media.

"From the department of really fantastic decision-making: MTV has tapped actress Rebel Wilson to host their annual movie awards," reported the Los Angeles Times.

"Get ready for some laughs at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards," said Abc news in America.
