Holly Hunter got a boost on International Women's Day with the news that her animated character Elastigirl topped a UK poll for best screen mum.

The character, voiced by Hunter in the 2004 Disney Pixar film The Incredibles, was voted ahead of Harry Potter's mum Lily in the survey.

Hunter, who is about to appear in Jane Campion's series Top of the Lake, said that Elastigirl was a great role model for today's women.

"I think she's so intuitive and so compassionate," she says.

"She has incredible power and I think she has great judgement that's accompanied with the power... and she's a lot of fun."

In an interview last year with IFC.com, The Incredibles director Brad Bird said he wouldn't rule out a sequel to the much-loved  film.

"I really love those characters and if I can figure out a whole story to do I would do it," he said.

And Hunter agrees: "I think it would be so much fun."
