Ahead of the release of the new trailer for The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug tomorrow we have been handed some exclusive character images to share with our readers.

Meet Elvenking Thranduil, who encounters Bilbo and the dwarves in his realm of Mirkwood and locks them in his dungeons.  

He is portrayed by American actor Lee Pace. Director Sir Peter Jackson said that Pace had been a favourite for the part, after he saw his performance in The Fall. The character first appeared in the prologue in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and will appear in the next two films.

The trailer is released tomorrow morning and the The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug hits cinemas on December 12.

The book, written by JRR Tolkien and then followed by the Lord of the Rings trilogy, has been transformed into a three-part movie by a team in Wellington led by director Sir Peter Jackson.

The first part of the Hobbit trilogy was premiered in Wellington last year. However, it was confirmed  The Desolation of Smaug would not have its world premiere in Wellington.
