Tolkien tourism has turned high-tech, as Hobbit fans are now able to tour Middle Earth on Google Maps.

Google and Warner Bros have collaborated to map out J.R.R Tolkien's fantasy world, as a promotion for the upcoming Hobbit sequel, The Desolation of Smaug.

The 3D interactive map is based on detailed drawings and maps by Tolkien.

Users can explore the fictional realms of Rivendell, Trollshaws and Dol Guldur on Chrome and Android, and encounter elves, wizards, trolls and other Middle Earth creatures along the way.

A Google spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal the joint project was a natural fit "because of all the geek fans everywhere".
