A ping-pong playing hobbit takes on all-comers in Sir Peter Jackson's latest peek behind the scenes of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

"We want to kick into this movie with a lot of urgency. It's like the race is on," Jackson tells a group of actors at the start of the production diary.

There are sword fights and arrows aplenty, broken up by shots of Martin Freeman playing table tennis in full Bilbo Baggins costume against Kiwi actor Mark Hadlow.

Freeman claimed to be unbeaten in 20 games, though complained his prosthetic hairy Hobbit feet were getting "bashed up" by his fancy footwork.

The video also features Orlando Bloom and English comedian Stephen Fry.

The world premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was held in Los Angeles this week.

Early reviews have been positive.

Time magazine has ranked it No 10 on its list of the best films of the year, describing it as a "vigorous and thrilling middle episode".

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in New Zealand cinemas 12 October.
