Weta Digital’s most famous CGI character has won it an award at one of Hollywood’s most prestigious animation awards.

The Wellington digital animation studio won the Annie Award for best character animation in a live action production for its work on Gollum in the first Hobbit film, An Unexpected Journey.

Gollum’s nominated animators — Jeff Capogreco, Jedrzej  Wojtowicz, Kevin Estey, Alessandro Bonora and Gino Acevedo — beat out another Weta team which animated the Goblin King in the same movie, and nominees for a character in Pacific Rim.

However, Weta lost out in the other category it was nominated  in, best animated effects in a live action production, where its work on Man Of Steel was beaten by Pacific Rim.

The biggest award of the night, best animated feature, went to the Disney film Frozen.
