Late Bloomers (M) (95min)
Directed by Julie Gavras.
Starring Isabella Rosselini, William Hurt, Joanna Lumley.
Rosselini and Hurt are a couple. They have three adult children. She is a retired teacher, he is still practicing as an architect.
Age is catching up with them both, fast. Late Bloomers is a portrait – and a very capable one at that – of two people, together and separately, going through a crisis. The film is genuinely funny, but also bold enough to not settle for being a mere comedy.
There is insight here, and great humour, and a couple of performances – in the leads, and among the supports – that will stay with you like an encounter with a wise and witty new friend.
If you like your films wonderfully cast, insightfully written, and lightly directed, you’ll love this.
