WELCOME TO THE SOUTH (M) (106 min)
Directed by Luca Miniero. Featuring Claudio Bisio, Alessandro Siani, Angela Finocchiaro.
In which the Italians remake the very good French Welcome to The Sticks. A middle-aged postal manager does bad, and gets himself, err, posted to the deep south, in a village outside Naples. It looked like paradise to me, but apparently, if you've got your heart set on the sophistication of Milan, a southern seaside village is a Very Bad Place.
Stereotypes are overthrown, sardines are on the menu, and love is in the air. Too many of the gags rely on regional accents, which really don't work in subtitles, but the film passes agreeably enough, with a few genuine laughs. And the scenery is pure postcard stuff.
