There's no mistaking those golden tones - a fresh spotlight has been cast on the early work of pop goddess Lorde with the airing of a couple of tracks featuring her work with her high school band And They Were Masked.

When we say early work, the 17-year-old's back catalogue doesn't go back that far, of course, but about May 2012, at the tender age of 15, she lent her distinctive vocals to an album called Characters.

The band's Facebook page cites its genre as "future noir" and lists influences PJ Harvey, Fugazi, the Mars Volta, Bloc Party and Massive Attack - all of which explain the heavy emo gloominess. The 11-track album is reasonably impressive for an amateur outfit. Lorde's vocals are lost slightly in the overwhelming production of Piece of Mind, while the strangely titled Sands of John is a bit of an unwieldy noise fest with her voice more of a backing element to the main male vocalist.

There was a post this morning on the website, clearly from a bemused band member surprised at the revived interest. "I just woke up and the internet is kinda crazy this morning," the post reads. "We've been rather inactive for the past two years."

It appears Lorde fans have been trying to buy copies of Characters; however, the post says "we actually don't have any physical cds left."

The full album can be heard here.

The next work to appear from New Zealand's current biggest export, also known as Ella Yelich-O'Connor, will be the The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 soundtrack, which she is pulling together and will provide the lead single. That will be out on November 21.
