Could this be the best rock festival line-up Australia has ever seen? Controversial Soundwave promoter AJ Maddah has named a stunning lineup of hard rock heavyweights from the last 25 years for his 2015 showpiece including Slash, Marilyn Manson, Soundgarden, Slipknot, Faith No More and Gerard Way (from My Chemical Romance).

Other big names include Incubus, Lamb of God, Fall Out Boy, veterans Judas Priest, Ministry, Fear Factory, Godsmack and Papa Roach.

If Maddah can hold on to his headliners - he's lost several in recent years including Blur, Megadeth, Newsted  - this could mark a barnstorming return to the winner's circle for him. He bought into the iconic Big Day Out festival in 2013, only to see it crumble after his first year. He also cancelled his own touring Harvest Festival and put on Soundwave with much smaller crowds than his triumphant 2013 event, which boasted Metallica, Linkin Park, The Offspring, Blink 182, Slayer, Garbage and Paramore.

Not only has Maddah secured what looks like one of the strongest ever rock festival lineups ever seen in Australia, several of the main acts appear likely to have new material to show off, including Manson, Soundgarden and Faith No More.

Faith No More played Soundwave in 2010, Slash appeared in 2011 and Manson and Slipknot were at the 2012 event, but Soundgarden have not played the festival before. The latter two acts have played several Big Day Outs and arguably find a home on the Soundwave bill because there will be no no Big Day Out next year.

Two-day tickets for the Soundwave festival will cost AU$188 (NZ$223). It will play in two cities on the same weekend, flipping Saturday and Sunday lineups between Adelaide and Melbourne on February 21 and 22, and Sydney with Brisbane on February 28 and March 1. Earlier this year Maddah announced the festival would not appear in Perth again after a series of wrangles with the WA government.
