Howzat. Fifth Doctor Who actor Peter Davison is returning to New Zealand to host the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular at Auckland's Vector Arena.

Davison, who sported cricket whites when he played the Doctor between 1981 and 1984, hosted the spectacular in Wellington in February alongside Bafta winning conductor Ben Foster.

''I had a fantastic time on the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular Tour in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year,'' Davison said.

''It was great to see audiences so enthralled by the combination of music and the monsters and I can't wait to join you again with this exciting new show.''

The spectacular, spun off from Doctor Who at the Proms events at The Royal Albert Hall, features Daleks, Cybermen and more of the Doctor's foes gyrating their way around the venue as the music plays.

''Once again Murray Gold's brilliant compositions are arranged by Ben Foster for full orchestra, and it is fantastic to be able to give audiences the opportunity to hear these pieces played live by your world class musicians,'' Davison said.

He told the Waikato Times earlier in the year: ''What really struck me was how spectacular it is . . . How fantastic it is to hear a live orchestra playing . . . it's almost like having the best sound system in the world in your front room.''

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra was conducted in February to play music Foster had arranged for the seven series of Doctor Who composed by Murray Gold.

By the time of the Auckland concert Peter Capaldi will be well ensconced as the Doctor, his first series having finished its first run on televisions the world over.

''Audiences will be able to hear the first public performances of music from the Capaldi era, encapsulating the dizzy rush and excitement of a new Doctor,'' Gold said.

The music will be played to specially edited sequences from Capaldi's first series in the role, Series Eight.

The new series starts on Prime on Sunday, August 31, after the first episode Deep Breath gets a cinematic airing this Sunday.

Tickets went on sale for the event on Monday and include the Ultimate Fan VIP Package in which fans can put their questions to Davison and find out how the symphonic spectacular is put together.

The Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular will be held on February 15, 2015, and tickets are available from Ticketmaster.
