Prepare to be Thunderstruck - AC/DC are on a highway to Godzone.

The legendary rockers have confirmed they will return to New Zealand for the first time in 14 years as part of their Black Ice World Tour.

The band will arrive next January to play at outdoor stadiums in Wellington and Auckland in what's being billed as one of the largest stage shows ever seen in this country.

Moving the aging rockers' production between venues is expected to take 48 semi-trailers.

The Kiwi tour the group's first since November 1996 comes on the back of the release of the hugely successful Black Ice album.

The hotly anticipated CD was the band's first studio album in more than eight years and was released globally on October 20, 2008.

AC/DC were formed in Sydney in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Six years later they recorded landmark album Highway to Hell. Tragedy struck the group in February 1980 when lead singer Bon Scott died but like true rockers the group continued making music.

Scott was replaced by Brian Johnson, who helped complete their album Back in Black which featured singles Hells Bells and You Shook Me All Night Long and has sold more than 22 million copies in the US alone.

The band lost popularity after drummer Phil Rudd was fired in 1983 but he returned 11 years later and contributed to the band's 1995 album Ballbreaker.

Stiff Upper Lip was released in 2000 and was well received by critics but it's Black Ice that has completed the Aussie rockers' revival.

AC/DC's Black Ice World Tour will play in Wellington on January 30 2010, and Auckland, February 6. A further announcement will be made in a few weeks regarding the venues, ticketing details and on-sale dates.

i notice that it has been mentioned that qe2 in chch wouldnt be big enough to hold an acdc concert. Well when they we at qe2 in 96 there was plenty of room we also have jade stadium where bon jovi played. So why is it that the north island gets two concerts and the south gets none.Instead of spending x amount of money on things like building a stadium in dunedin that wont get used how about doing chch stadiums up

I worked as an ambulance officer at the last AC/DC concert in Wellington and can remember all too clearly how shameful the behaviour of the crowd was. Admittedly the crowd in the Milard Stand (true fans I would say) were well behaved but the ground crowd were a disgrace. I do remember the then major stating that they would never be invited back to Wellington. The pathway of destruction from Newtown into the CBD was unbelievable and A&E at Wellington Hospital was a zoo of unconscious drugged and drunk individuals. Lets hope this concert the audience will be a bit better behaved

Great that AC/DC are coming to NZ! I'll be there for sure. There's so many haters in this country - Nth Island vs South Island? Gimme a break! Just be happy there's an AC/DC concert coming to OUR COUNTRY......Jeff #29 - Do you fly domestically much? When was the last time you used a passport to fly domestically? haha. egg.

I would hate for any fan like Cynthia to miss out on a great concert because they are waiting for a South Island gig to be annouced.

The sad fact is there is no room in the tour schedule to move 48 large containers of gear to Christchurch. The stage is so big it takes 7-8 days to build and 3 days to break down. The stage in Wellington will be immediately shipped to Australia where I expect the tour will finish in Perth before the band heads to East Asia.

The tour window for this part of the world is only 4 weeks which meant that they were only ever going to play in two NZ cities. If you do not want to miss a great concert book your discount airline flight now and catch the band on Saturday night in Wellington.

@ Jim King #12:

1. "privileged credit card holders" - yes, it's a privilege to hold a credit card - one you have to earn and maintain by having a good credit history and good payment history on your card. 2. "let's hope it doesn't happen again like Simon and Garfunkel"...WTF? I hardly think that S & G are in the same genre of music as ACDC and hardly llikely to attract the same fan base. The same problem might apply in being sold out, but that is what happens with all big/popular shows - U2, RHCP to name just 2. The problem is not the pre-sales to credit card holders, it is the fact that more often than not there are no limits on the number of tickets one is able to purchase, other than the available balance on your credit card. There is also no penalty for scalping - I may be wrong there, and am prepared to be corrected. The problem is the selfish, greedy buggers who buy 20 tickets, not intending to use any of them, only to scalp them on Trademe etc. Put a limit on the amount of tickets that can be pre-bought,and prosecute those that scalp, and that may go some way to curbing the problem of sold-out events. I feel for the SI people in not getting a show, but as others have said, it down't cost that much to get to Welly and you have plenty of time to save up. I will be going to the Auckland show, and have to drive from Rotorua to get there, organise accomodation etc. It will cost me, but will be well worth the money!
