Woah - what is this? A Pearl Jam album with ridiculous cartoon cover art and a hit pop song? One would think the dirty grunge rockers were - whisper it - enjoying themselves.

It's true. Backspacer - Pearl Jam's ninth studio album that clocks in at a concise 11 tracks and 30 minutes - is the sound of Eddie Vedder and the boys loosening up, shrugging their shoulders and having fun. Quite a lot of it, by the sounds of things.

The first sign of this new attitude was the single The Fixer, a joyous pop song being played repeatedly on commercial radio. That's something the band that released 1996's "challenging" No Code and refused to make music videos for several albums wouldn't have liked.

But it doesn't end there. Backspacer is packed with full forward rock songs showcasing the band's new-found sense of freedom. Best of all, there's none of the angsty intensity that plagued overly serious mid-career albums like 2000's Binaural and 2002's Riot Act.

Check out fiesty opener Gonna See My Friend, the wah-wah riffs of Johnny Guitar and The Fixer's hooks  for proof that this album is going to go down a treat live. Vedder's croaky howl just seems to be getting better with age, and it's showcased perfectly on tender acoustic ballad Just Breathe and piano-based footstomper Unknown Thought.

Then there's Amongst the Waves, a soaring album highlight that finds Vedder winding up into the kind of slow-building anthem Pearl Jam abandoned after In Hiding, from 1998's Yield.

"I wanna live my life with the volume full," screams an optimistic Vedder on full-on rock assault Supersonic. It seems that the 40,000 fans packed into Mt Smart Stadium on November 27 won't be the only ones enjoying themselves when they're singing along to those words.

@ Mike (#30)

I listened to the songs on your link, I want that 12 minutes of my life back please. I moved to Australia to get away from the Feelers... and music like this.

Isn't the song 'Unthought Known' not 'Unknown Thought'??!!

I think that the backspacer sounds very familiar to this band:

Plagiarism perhaps?

'If people liked the early albums but not so much the 90's ones' - huh? Everything up to Binaural was released in the 90's. What do you consider their early stuff that wasn't released in the 90's?

Family Guy   #28   01:17 pm Sep 24 2009

It's a pretty damned good album. If people liked the early albums but not so much the 90's ones, they'll probably like this.(Hell, I like them all.) Thanks to the guys, and I'll see you in Christchurch!

PS - rilrod #10 - you're an idiot. Get a life.

"I feel like this is fun for a while but won't challenge me over a long period of time. I felt the same with the self-titled, which I don't go back and listen to all that often. But the greats, like Yield (my favourite), Vitalogy and No Code - I often revisit them."

Agree with this. I am not a big revisiter of Self-titled but i went back to it yesterday to compare it with my slight disappointment at Backspacer and you know what, Self-Titled is better than i think of it being. Most tracks are genuinely memorable on it. I just don't see Backspacer standing the test of time for me. The lesser tracks are bland and rather than challenging, the good tracks are fun and knockabout and unlikely to grow much more than i like them now.

Good to see some Binaural support from someone. I'll say it again - it's their ignored masterpiece. An album from a darker place, a true work of art.

By the way Rilrod, you're a tool. I think that's patently obvious to everyone.

"you are not a fan if Ten is your favourite album"

You sir, take the douchebag award. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. My favourite PJ album is VS but I dont see how liking that one the most or any other album the most makes me a fan or not.
