Psychedelic British rock act Muse have been named to headline the 2010 Big Day Out, along with a line-up of tried and true festival-friendly acts.

As was widely rumoured, Muse were this morning confirmed as headliners for New Zealand's biggest music festival, to be held at Mt Smart Stadium on Friday, January 15. It will be their third Big Day Out appearance, and their first as headliners.

If the line-up has a familiar ring to it, that's because Big Day Out regulars will recognise many of the names joining Muse on the bill.

UK rockers Kasabian, prog-rock act The Mars Volta, pop star Lily Allen, rapper Dizzee Rascal, controversial Canadian art-rocker Peaches, Rise Against and Australian acts Eskimo Joe and Powderfinger have all performed at previous Big Day Out festivals at least once before.

New bands joining the line-up include this year's metal breakthrough act Mastodon, UK rockers The Horrors, mash-up king Girl Talk, The Decemberists and Aussies The Temper Trap and Karnivool.

Heating up the venue's infamous Boiler Room will be British dance gurus Groove Armada, and Scottish DJ Calvin Harris.

The first line-up announcement also includes many big name Kiwi acts, including PNC, Kora, Dimmer, Minuit, Gin Wigmore, The Checks, Ladyhawke, and newcomer James Duncan.

Rumours that Blink 182, Weezer, Eminem and David Bowie would be named have proved to be incorrect - but two more line-up announcements will be made before the festival is finalised.

Tickets will cost $132 (plus booking fee) and go on sale on October 9.

#200 comments below...wow you obviously havent seen MUSE live have you? They have been around for over 10 years, released 5 epic albums and last year sold out Wembly Stadium 2 nights in a row. They are currenlty doing a world tour of which every show has been sold out in advance and as of right now...are the worlds biggest act. I rest my case.

I'm number 185#. Evolving? Really. The point I was trying to make is that all bands are crap. They've managed a few hit singles of digitally enhanced music. Basically all the bands announced are either unheard of because they havent been in long enough. Its not worth paying so much money for a band that have only released one song onto the charts. Kings of Leon I would pay to see. I'm not saying they all have to 90's bands. Just bands that actually have been around for a while.

And I truly hope I won't be having a hip replacemnt at 57!

Why does the price go up every year by about $15 when the line ups are getting worse?? There is no metal or rock bands!! So disappointing, its no longer worth going to!! :( Rather than having a diverse line up its all teeny bopper, dance music that not everybody is into.

MUSE alone worth the price of admission. EPIC LIVE....not many bands come close to these guys. They are pure entertainers and Bellamy is a genius. I think the rest of the lineup looks like good fun too. BRING IT ON I SAY.

Good, fun line up. Muse are fantastic live. Groove Armada are epic live, I don't know what all you people are crying about, it's def in top 5 days of the year even when you get a head liner like Neil Young (who was av)! Maybe you need to test out trying to get a ticket in Aus and realise the true value for these tickets

Kinda disappointing. Hopefully more headliners are announced, here's hoping Pixies or Radiohead.

Sure there were good years in the 90s but if you look at say 2000, or 2004 they were spectacular years. Once you experience that you know what a difference a fantastic lineup is like. Its a bland year, and safe choices have been made, with so many bands having played Big Day Out before, generally speaking it creates little interest for that 25+ demographic (of course there's always the die-hard fan that will gleefully pay $100 to see there beloved Janes Addiction, New Order, or Iggy Pop) is one band enticing enough though? It must be said the BDO is for that 15 to 20ish age more than ever, once upon a time it wasn't like this, we have to move on of course, we're a little country and the BDO was all we had there for awhile - now there a range of great festivals around weather it be the falls in aussie, lollapalooza in the US, even NZ's alowhum. No doubt the BDO will still sell out or get close because of the more commercial aspects now associated with the BDO, the hype and radio friendly bands. BDO is more popular than ever, its a young peoples playground. Thats the nature of the best, and money speaks. The great thing is theres plenty of other festivals out there tailor made for us all, this just isnt one of them...anymore.
