CD review: I Told You I Was Freaky - Flight of the Conchords

There are likely to be plenty of arguments over whether Flight of the Conchords' I Told You I Was Freaky is better than their top-selling 2008 debut.
It could even be as heated as the debate over whether the second season, from which most of the songs on I Told You I Was Freaky originate, is as good as the first.
Many of the songs on their self-titled debut, as well as those on the EP The Distant Future, had been percolating for years in Flight of the Conchords' live shows, long before they were feted in the United States and Britain.
So this really is business time for Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie. Thankfully, not only do they pull it off, but in many ways I Told You I Was Freaky is even better.
From the album cover, a parody of Seals and Croft's Summer Breeze, to deadpan lyrics, which had me laughing out loud.
"Were you ever called a homo 'cause in school you took drama? Have you ever been told that you look like a llama?"
And almost effortless-sounding interpretations of many genres - folk (Rambling Through the Avenues of Time), hip-hop (the hilarious Hurt Feelings, Sugalumps), 80s synth pop (Fashion is Danger), rhythm and blues (We're Both in Love with a Sexy Lady), 70s rock (Demon Woman), Eastern European (Petrov, Yelyena and Me) and bubblegum pop (Friends).
Again, this album exhibits Flight of the Conchords' distinct strengths, not just as the fourth most popular Kiwi folk parody duo, but as Wellington's biggest international success story since Peter Jackson.
Some musicians use humour in their work, but are largely better musicians than comedians. Some comedians use music, but should really stick to comedy.
Clement and McKenzie, a member of The Black Seeds and solo act Video Kid, excel at both. They are able to marry hilarious, razor-sharp lyrics with strong songwriting and musicality.
The lovely Angels could easily sit on any "serious" album. Throw in the fact that they have again roped in producer Mickey Petralia and this is another high flier.

This album is a real grower, especially the second half, which is pretty much flawless. We're Both In Love... is hilarious, Fashion is a helluva tune, You Don't Have To Be A Prostitute had me in stitches, Friends is sweet, Carol Brown is a great great song, Angels is the perfect album ender. I haven't even mentioned the two standout videos from the series, Sugalumps and Too Many Dicks! How many other albums this year have 7 or 8 standout tracks?
Four stars? You can't be serious.
I find it weird that "song for epileptic dogs" didn't make it onto the album, since it was one of the funniest ones in season 2, and better than 90% of the tracks that did make it on... madness!
If Simon's review is too harsh (and it is, extremely so), then this one is too blindly complimentary. Where's the balance?
*Whew* On one sarcastic hand, I want to say: thanks for choking this one out. On the other grateful hand, I'll just say: thanks for at least trying, from the perspective of a far away-living, non-New Zealand native who appreciates the results of FotC's/Bret and Jemaine's creative endeavors. Remember NZ media: appropriate, honest respect/critique of your successful, homegrown talent-base goes a long way (next time just try to do it before it seems trite, retrospect and reactionary and you'll be set). For real, they won't go off and try to rule the universe if you give a little heart-felt praise. Or...maybe they will... Off to listen to some very cool music that makes me very happy.
I like the guys, and I want to like this album, but it's just... not funny. A disappointment. Tom I doubt you will still be listening to it in two month's time - let alone longer.
Although I think they will never top the dizzying heights of Business Time, Carol Brown and Too Many Dicks are still very catchy songs.Hurt Feelings is awesome too...
Too many dicks on the dancefloor! one of them won't be dancing. that'll be sweetman.
He he. Eat that, Sweetman.
