Stan Walker is still coming to terms with being crowned Australian Idol.

The 19-year-old Melbourne-born, New Zealand-raised singer last month took out the competition and it's been a whirlwind ride since.

"It's been full-on, just full-on, just singing, promotion, photo shoots, publicity," Walker says.

His new album, Introducing Stan Walker, was released in New Zealand yesterday.

The album includes tracks he sang on the televised show, along with a duet with the first Australian Idol winner, Guy Sebastian, titled Think Of Me, and Walker's debut single Black Box.

In New Zealand briefly to promote the album, Walker says he's overwhelmed and the win is yet to sink in.

"I've just been focusing on what I'm doing, and trying to promote my CD and get things happening and touring and everything, so I'm just working really so it hasn't sunk in."

Along with a record deal with Sony BMG, Walker won a $200,000 artist development fund and a car.

After a rapid-fire few days in New Zealand to promote his album, including a performance at the Maori Sports Awards in Auckland on Saturday, he heads back to Australia today for more promotional work.

He says the Australian public and media have been supportive, despite his identification of himself as a New Zealander (he even has a tattoo on his neck reading "ataahua", Maori for "beautiful").

"They try and claim me now. I'm obviously not an Aussie - don't sound like one, don't look like one.

"I'm a Maori, I'm from New Zealand but I just live in Australia, it's my home for the moment."

Walker grew up near Tauranga and also lived in Hamilton and Taranaki, where he went to boarding school.

He says he always planned a career in singing, with or without the help and exposure Australian Idol has given him.

His plans were cemented when Good Charlotte rockers Joel and Benji Madden, and Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz, announced they were fans - not to mention the praise of crooner Michael Buble, who made a guest appearance on the show: "That voice ... it's like God kissed your throat".

Walker says Buble's praise is humbling and a bit embarrassing, but very encouraging.

More embarrassing are the hoards of screaming girls he encounters when he's out in public, which he laughingly refers to as "a treasure".

"I try to stay clear from them," he says.

His legion of female fans will be pleased to know he is indeed single - and can't wait to get married and have kids.

But, in the meantime, Walker will be playing more shows and working on an original album, which he hopes to release around the middle of next year.

And as he says he is not an Ozzie he just lives there so all you Ozzies trying to claim him your wasting your time!! Kia ora Stan you made NZ proud you keep going and live your dream who cares what haters say!!

I love it....New Zealanders are slowly but surly taking over Australia!

Stan's single 'Black box' is still in the top 10 on itunes well after his win two odd weeks ago

Ask Stan if he's Kiwi or Aussie. What he says is what counts, not opinionated nobodys!

As for the "here today: gone tomorrow" haters, O.K! How about booking yourselves into Burger King in 5years where you can enjoy some 'fries' and try to calculate how much Mr WALKER's net worth would be by then??

Maybe you can reflect on your own miserable lives and sift through some of the 'negativity' that confines you there!!

STANLEY, CONGRATS USO! GO HARD AND HANG ON TIGHT FOR HOWEVER LONG THE RIDE LASTS. GOD BLESS.

The only thing he has proven to me so far is that he can win the vote of a pack of screaming school girls.

Not talent required for that.

Any one remember Ben Lummis?

No, neither do I.

After NZ Idol. He released a single (only charted in NZ) "They Cant Take that Away". It went number one in NZ.

Shortly after released an album "One Road" (2004) that was canned by NZ Music Industry and called "worst sounding album he has heard in his career" by Paul Ellis.

After that, he appeared on a reality TV singing show, Pop's Ultimate Star (2007). He was booted out early.

He tried to release a few singles over his web site, no one listened to them.

Ben who?

What did one poster in here say about the attention span of 15yo schoolgirls?

if Stan Walker claims himself a Kiwi then so be it. Just let him be.Like what he said in the article "They try and claim me now. I'm obviously not an Aussie - don't sound like one, don't look like one.

Stan Walker states

"They try and claim me now. I'm obviously not an Aussie - don't sound like one, don't look like one."

Stan, what does an Aussie 'look' like? Australia, just like New Zealand is a country of immigrants. Just like New Zealand is is made up of dozens and dozens of ethnic groups (including over 600,000 New Zealanders that live there permanently)

You should be grateful to them mate. They have given a kick start to a possible singing career. No Aussie Idol = No Stan Walker.

I wonder how you would have faired in NZ Idol? Ohhh thats right, it got canned coz it sucked.

But Dave, the view from up here is spectacular!

Terry   #42   02:59 pm Dec 09 2009

Dave #36 stated

"Instant TV manufactured Music "star" produced by a show directly aimed at 15yo giggling schoolgirls that have the attention span of an ant. Two weeks later, they have moved onto new 'dream boat' to drool and giggle over"

Perfectly said mate. Getting voted 'most popular' by a pack of giggling schoolgirls has not earned Stan any 'stripes'. He has to prove himself now out in the REAL world. And without the drooling schoolgirls that now he is not on Idol have now moved on to giggling over the bare chests of the guys in the second Twilight movie.

In twelve months time, no one here will know even who Stan is. I doubt many that have posted in here can name 4 American Idol winners without googling it.

You CAN NOT mass produce REAL talent like its a car assembly line.
