A smaller-than-expected turnout at One Love meant the crowd was able to be more spaced out than usual.

About 10,000 turned up at Hataitai Velodrome for Saturday's day-long music festival to mark Waitangi Day and celebrate the birthday of reggae legend Bob Marley.

One Love organiser Dave Gibbons said the crowd was about 5000 fewer than last year.

"I think that is because One Love works better when Waitangi Day is during the week. And then there was the sevens and a bit of a clash-off there. But there was a really nice vibe and ... the whole thing went really smoothly."

The 13th annual summer festival was heavy on reggae but also included roots, soul and folk music, and was co-headlined by Don McGlashan and Sola Rosa.

There was also a performance by traditional Maori instrument expert Richard Nunns and the Etymologists, Mr Gibbons said. "It was very cool and a beautiful experience."

One Love, and its philosophy of "unity within diversity", would be back next year.

I agree with Matt #9, this is the first time I haven't been to a One Love since it started. $10 at the gate, forget it. We had a better time at the beach.

It was a beautiful day with peaceful vibes and great music. And, as people have said - Mungo's Hi Fi absolutely killed it up there at the end - heavyweight future roots music from Scotland working with a host of great kiwi MCs. Irie!

At Matt #9 - chill out a bro? So some people wanted to make a little bit of coin on a sunny Saturday, it's not the end of the world. The stalls were at the back and you didn't have to go to them. I personally visited the bar once, and that was nmy shopping for the day. "Very few decent bands", who didn't you like? Richard Nunns and the Etymologists were a bit wack, I'll give you that, but interesting nonethelss, and everyone else pretty much killed it. "You sold out hard", get off your high horse mate, I'd like to see you organise something better. Once again, massive respect to One Love and everyone invovled!

Radio Active would like to thanks all who attended, played, supported and partied on Saturday - so much fun, sun and good vibes!

Unity through diversity!

One Love, and its philosophy of "consumerism within diversity,” Its pretty hard not to feel something, when a gig you used to go to has now just turned into a money maker with poor bands. There were about 25 stalls, selling everything from coffee to alcohol, but then also fake branded T’s, Bob Marley branded – anything that will sell, and cheap plastic looking sunnies. The event is no longer as popular for that reason, and that there were very few descent bands. Totally underwhelming event all round, after maybe 6 or 7, I think that will be my last. Sorry One Love, but you sold out hard

I assumed it was on (as it is every other year) but there was very little promotion around town... The 7's and Sandwiches waterfront event seemed to dominate. I think $10 is pretty good value, whatever bands turn up.

Well julie, I think you'll find that One Love has always been laced with non reggae acts - trinity roots, little bushman, fat freddy's (don't try to argue that they're reggae) among many others. I'm not a huge fan of Don but his vibe suited the event perfectly and was well appreciated by all. I'm glad the pop-reggae act that is the Black Seeds didn't play, they're stale and bring a certain type of crowd that can be detrimental - and are probably "too good" to play for free now.

It was a brilliant day, awesome atmosphere and great sounds. Sorry you missed out on it.

One Love was amazing, good people and good times. Yeah the $10 entrance fee is worse than free but it's still a pittance for the professional organisation and effort that goes into a day like that. There aren't any suits rolling in piles of cash as a result of the day. And real reggae bands like the black seeds? They're definitely reggae influenced but I think you would be hard pressed to call them a reggae band. They're not Katchafire. Don McGlashan was an odd choice, but he is a legend, and I'm sure it brought people who in who otherwise wouldn't have gone. More to the point, the other artists were amazing. Sola Rosa also rule it, and the Midnights were an unexpected surprise. And Mungo's Hi Fi Soundsystem killed it - I could have listened to them all day. Saw him later at the San Fran after party and he was on form. Wish that the host of One Love had let him play one more song...but I guess everything can't be perfect.

Big up to everyone who organised One Love, may it continue to spread its message!
