The petitions have paid off - Metallica will perform a show in Christchurch as part of their upcoming New Zealand tour.

The heavy metal band, fronted by James Hetfield and with a hard rocking history of more than 20 years, will perform at the CBS Canterbury Arena on September 22.

That's three weeks before the band's two sold out shows at Auckland's Vector Arena on October 13 and 14.

Metallica, who released their latest album Death Magnetic two years ago to rave reviews, received much criticism from New Zealand fans south of Auckland for missing them out on their tour.

Letters were written, petitions were signed and Christchurch mother Andrea Grom even set up a Facebook page, attracting more than 11,000 Christchurch fans.

The band cited "overwhelming" demand as the reason a one-off Christchurch show was scheduled.

"When we got wind of the massive petitions for us to come to Christchurch we just had to check it out  ... and wow, the number of requests were overwhelming," a band statement released to Stuff.co.nz said.

"The moral of the story is to be careful what you wish for because 'Tallica is coming to your town on September 22 at CBS Canterbury Arena."

The show will be different to the two scheduled in Auckland as the CBS Canterbury Arena can't accommodate Metallica's famed round stage set up used around the world during their two-year Death Magnetic tour.

The statement said Metallica would make up for it with an intimate "club style" show lasting for more than two hours.

"It's gonna be us and you old-school 'club style' in an arena making a whole lot of noise together, and that's what counts ... Thanks for all the love and support."

Tickets for the Christchurch show go on sale on July 15. The presale begins July 13.

Hi, I have two GA Front tickets to the 22nd September show I want to trade for 2 GA Front tickets for either one of the Auckland shows as my friend can't make September the week of the concert. I also have two $50 flights to Christchurch from Wellington that is transferable by name and/or as credit which I can chuck in. You can contact me through criki4542@gmail.com and we can sort something out, cheers.

I hope bar owners think to cash in this time, someone should stay open for a metallica after-party. Speights Ale-house across the road I'm talking to you. After the Iron Maiden concert thousands of thirsty patrons walked past your pub and you were closed!! An aussie dude asked me for directions to the afterparty and I had to tell him it's NZ and everyone is asleep. shame

Washed up has beens who have only produced a semi-decent record lately because they went "We're so big we can do what we want, oh wait our fans hate that we better change back" ... sorry too late, you lost me at Load.

@Slayer Fan You do realise its the promoter who jacks up the price of tickets for Christchurch right? They just want to keep the same margins they have for Auckland.

Good on the ChCh fans and good on Metallica for listening!

@James #90 - closer to 30 than 20 actually, but i guess technically "over 20" is more correct.

I'm a fan, not die hard but I thought I'd go, but $180 a ticket geez you could buy their back catalogue on CD's for that.

The venue they're playing at sits 9,000 x $180= $1.62 million dollars, after minusing over heads they'd still have to clear nearly a million bucks. Not bad for a nights work hey.

Its all about the fans though right?
