Dave Dobbyn is set to headline an acoustic tour of church venues with support from members of Christchurch band Dukes.
Now in its second year, the tour has expanded to 12 shows in 11 cities - with New Plymouth and Nelson joining Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Napier, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch (with two shows in different venues), Dunedin and Invercargill on the tour through churches, chapels and cathedrals.
The first show is at Chapel of Christ The King at St Paul's Collegiate in Hamilton on September 9.
Dobbyn, who last year celebrated three decades in music, is known for a string of hits including Loyal, Slice of Heaven and Welcome Home.
Dobbyn said he was very much looking forward to the tour.
"I'm excited by the ambiences of churches. There are layers of resonance that are ideal for singing.
"I've always been transported by the sonics of such rooms. In performance it allows you to expand the dynamic range without over-playing. I love that challenge. There's also an intimacy about it. In these rooms I'll be playing acoustic guitars and a piano," he said.
Long-time friend Ross Burge will play percussion and drums and will joined L A Mitchell and brothers Jo and Matt Barus from the Dukes.

Can we bring our own lions?
Dave. You have to do Erskine Chappel in Island Bay, Wellington. The accoustics are awesome and the setting is beautiful. Any chance of a trip to Brisbane? There are alot of homesick Kiwis over here who would love some hometown tunes. Maybe Bic and Tim could join you? Bring some Kiwi support acts too.
Why does it seem the religion is driving NZ music at the moment? There are fantastic NZ musicians who havent joined the 'club'
Of course Anglican churches will be ok for these concerts, as the Christchurch Cathedral has seen similar events in the past. Let's not forget that this is a denomination that was formed by King Henry VIII who was committing adultery with his mistress and then wanted to divorce his wife so he could marry his mistress. Six wives and several executions later, the evil man finally perished from diseases related to his excesses. The church in recent times has since further abandoned Christ's teachings by allowing openly gay ministers, in an attempt to widen its appeal and shore up its dwindling numbers. While people of the church are generally wonderful, Christian people, the very foundation of this church leaves it open to the very misrepresentation of the Truth that has been witnessed from its very inception
1)He's christian, he goes to chruch, he can perform there. 2)tickets are $60, and his support is Dukes. Thats cheap for a great kiwi artist and a mean kiwi band. 3)Its not going to be like a Lamb of God performance, no-one in the audience will be offended by him, he'll play stuff like "Loyal", "Welcome Home", "Slice of Heaven", "Just add Water", "Shouldn't you oughtta be in love". The audience he attracts will be appreciative of this music.
To me, Churches are less about the worship of fictional characters and more about introspection. A testament to peace, common goal & artistry so uncommon in the rest of society. This will be a perfectly intimate & appropriate setting for DD to deliver great music. It's great music because there are bugger-all "gentlemen musicians" out there who have journeyed into the darker sides of the human condition so intensely, demonstrated that experience through the media of music, and come out the otherside shining. This gives him true & genuine credentials & I don't see why anyone would want to miss out on that.
The minute God or Jesus is mentioned, it's going to devalue the whole experience.
The ideal set list would be... 1. Beside you, 2. Hallelujah Song, 3. One proud minute, 4. Just add water, 5. Welcome home, 6. Shouldn't you aughta be in love 7. I never left you,
this tour has no relevance to god or religion...i cant imagine brent eccles filling the donation box with a 50% of profits. This is total gimmick marketing, an opportunity to line the pockets of a musician and promoter before Dave heads off on a winery tour come summer...watch this space
