Rich Cronin, former lead singer of the boy band LFO and the writer of its 1999 hit Summer Girls, has died after a battle with leukemia, celebrity news site TMZ reported. He was 35.

The news was also reported via Twitter by Lance Bass, a former member of 'N Sync, who described Cronin as "an amazing guy". It was not clear where Cronin died.

The Boston native co-founded LFO - short for "Lyte Funky Ones" - in 1995 with Brad Fischetti and Brian Gillis (who was later replaced by Devin Lima).

They signed a deal with Lou Pearlman, the now-imprisoned pop impresario behind 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys.

But Cronin sought to differentiate his band from other male vocal groups, which relied on outside songwriters and producers to deliver soulful pop hits.

LFO introduced hip-hop and rock into the equation, and hit No. 3 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart with the inescapable summer anthem "Summer Girls."

The follow-up, Girl on TV, reached No. 10, but subsequent singles failed to crack the top 40. The band broke up in 2003.

Cronin was diagnosed with cancer in 2005, and set up a foundation to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

@Shane - Your comment on this article and the vast majority of comments on sweetmans blog are far from responces that have been thought out. Just knee jerk anonymous internet banter. Nothing about Sweetmans blog in thoughtout, no more than how many hits he can get by saying something 'controversial'.

Wow how bad is the lyrics to this song?? I was like 10 at the time it came out so didnt understand how awful it was. Sad that he passed away though. You dont see average girls like that on video clips anymore

Come on....why any comments about this guy or his band.

The song featured is drivel, Every Other Time is a better song, however it's not like they or him were one of the important artists of our time.

Show your readers, posters, followers and subscribers a little respect and start allowing comments on items that actually have some depth and not just on some no talent one hit wonder. And yeah, five or six singles but only one song in ANY top ten chart.

At least Sweetmans (Blood On The Tracks) blog, whether you love or hate it generally tries to provoke a response that requires some level of thought from the people who read it.
