Troubled pop star Britney Spears could perform at this year's MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, despite being ridiculed after last year's wayward appearance.
The singer was laughed at for her shambolic showing at 2007 ceremony, appearing dazed as she struggled to remember the lyrics and dance routine to Gimme More.
However, bosses have not ruled her out as a potential performer at this year's bash in September.
Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music Group, said: "Everyone deserves a second or third chance, right?
"I'm not sure how we top Britney opening the show. We are working on it every minute of every day."
Britney was reportedly spotted "crying badly" backstage after her performance in Las Vegas last year as her comeback was described as a "disaster".
Wearing a sparkly black bra and hot pants, she looked bleary eyed and unfit as she struggled to keep up with her energetic backing dancers, who threw themselves around stripper poles.
Cameras revealed celebrity guests, including 50 Cent, scoffing at Britney's performance, while Rihanna was seen in fits of laughter.
Following the song, comedienne Sarah Silverman came on stage and sarcastically said: "Was that incredible? Britney Spears, everyone. Wow. She is amazing. She is 25-years-old and she's already accomplished everything she's going to accomplish in her life. It's mind blowing."
Since then, Britney's career has been in decline and she has struggled to get her personal life back on track following her breakdown earlier this year.
However, she has been pictured recently looking healthy and happy emerging from dance studios and last week was granted overnight access to her sons, Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, 21 months.

She should totally open up the MTV Awards. A new album, a new Britney, a new stage in her life. For MTV it would b a good decision, ratings ratings ratings.
I think she should perfom again she'll do a better performance cause I really want her to show the world again by doing an extravagant performance, but a godd song not that crappy song gimme more were all u hear is gimme more in the background 88 times and thats it I want her to have a fantastic year.

I hope she does it! She's been through a lot and she was a staple on MTV in the late 90's eary 2000's and deserves another shot.

Of Course she does! I mean shes Britney Spears it just wouldnt be the same without her whether shes terrible or amazing people are still guna wanna see her perform. I hope she does well! she deserves a shot at getting things right again xx
I think Britney could still do a good job at performing. She just needs the right people to back her up. Blackout was a great album as well as innovative. If she just works as hard as she has been for the past year then I believe that she can make a complete comeback. There are people who want her to do good. It's just the negativity that probably distracts her. All she needs is her confidence back and she will be able to prove herself to everyone.
She should definitely do it. Whats one mediocre performance out of the ton of amazing performances shes done? MTV always benefits from a Britney spears performance good or bad they would be fools to not have her on again.

i love her. considering in all the years she has been on the stage and performing from such a young age , everyone is allowed to have an off performance. look at madonna years ago. no one was intersted in her and everything was all about her personal life. shes back on top now, i think all icons go through a rough patch! get off britters back!we love you!
