Foo Fighters to rock Western Springs
The Foo Fighters are set to kick off the summer music season in style with a massive outdoor concert at Western Springs in Auckland.
The chart-topping rock act, who were last here in April for a Christchurch earthquake charity show, will perform to up to 55,000 people on Tuesday, December 13 at Western Springs, it was announced today.
The band's opening act will be Tenacious D, the comedy rock act fronted by actor Jack Black and his mate Kyle Gass who were last here in 2007.
Promoters said it was likely more acts would be added to the bill, which will tour six Australian dates before coming to New Zealand.
Front man Dave Grohl told the Sydney Morning Herald that the band was nervous about upgrading its shows to stadiums for the tour and selling enough tickets.
"Could you imagine being so presumptuous that you just decide we're back and we're playing the biggest place you have?" he asked.
"I don't know how you guys see our band, but we don't see our band that way. We still see ourselves as the band that won the lottery and wound up playing Wembley. We don't feel entitled to your stadiums," he said.
Before their Auckland Town Hall show in April, they performed two sold out shows at Vector Arena in 2008 with a capacity of 12,500 on each night.
The Foos hinted a new tour was imminent on its Facebook page yesterday.
The message said: "Good morning AUS + NZ. So ... Are you guys gonna be around tomorrow ? Checkin the facebooks & stuff? Kinda have something we should talk about....cough cough.. rock tour.. cough cough."
Recent shows have seen the Foos playing for nearly three hours, including most of new album Wasting Light.
A pre-sale for tickets begins on July 14 which fans have access to at Frontier Touring.
Tickets go on general release midday on July 18.
