It's time to hand out a few more trophies, but this time it's for songs rather than scrums.

And it is a mixture of youth and experience in the running at tonight's Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.

Leading the charge, with six nominations, is The Naked and Famous - a band who have gone from strength to strength this year with a number of their songs picked up for American TV shows and winning 2010's Silver Scroll Award.

The band's debut album Passive Me, Aggressive You is up for Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Best Group, Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Alternative Album and the People's Choice Award.

Also in the running - with five nominations each - are Ladi6 and Brooke Fraser. David Dallas, Tiki Taane, Six60 and Avalanche City received three finalist spots each.

Fraser, Ladi6 and The Naked and Famous will all return home from international tours to walk the red carpet and perform at the ceremony, along with Six60, Tiki Taane and Avalanche City.

Music veterans Supergroove will also pay tribute to this year's Legacy Award winner Dragon, who will be inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame on the night.

The Naked and Famous and Ladi6 are also nominated for the NZ On Air Best Music Video award - The Naked and Famous for Punching in a Dream, directed by Special Problems, and Ladi6 for her hit single Like Water, directed by Faye McNeil. Special Problems' video for Zowie's single Broken Machine is also nominated.

The VNZMA winners will be named tonight at Auckland's Vector Arena.
