They say a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, so the armful of Tuis The Naked and Famous and Brooke Fraser walked away with from last night's Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards must be priceless.
Both acts took home five Tui Awards, with The Naked and Famous winning the coveted Russian Standard Vodka Album of the Year Award and Fraser the International Achievement Award.
The Auckland indie band took home awards for Single of the Year, Best Group, Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Best Alternative Album and they won Best Music Video for Punching In A Dream, produced by Special Problems.
Lead guitarist Thom Powers said the wins were unexpected.
"I came into tonight dreading making a fool of myself saying thank you.
"It's flattering, it's wonderful but everyone's wonderful."
As well as her international achievement, Fraser, who has just finished a tour of the UK and Europe, also won Best Pop Album, Highest Selling New Zealand Single for Something In The Water, Highest Selling New Zealand Album for Flags and the People's Choice Award.
Fraser said she was worried about getting her five trophies home.
"I've just come off three months tour so my luggage is pretty packed. These might have to be carry on."
She said next on her agenda was doing some much-needed washing before heading back on the road.
Other big winners included Tiki Taane, with three wins for Best Male Solo Artist as well as Best Electronica and Best Maori Album for his second studio album In The World Of Light.
Best Female Solo Artist went to Ladi6, whose album The Liberation Of also took home the Tui for Best Urban Hip Hop Album - an award she also picked up in 2009.
Along with the awards, Auckland's Vector Arena came to life with performances from Fraser and The Naked and Famous, as well as Ladi6, Six60, Avalanche City and Taane, who performed alongside the "love police" in a nod to his brush with the law earlier this year.
And it was a case of one Kiwi classic paying tribute to another as Supergroove performed its own, unique version of Rain to honour this year's Legacy Award winner Dragon.
Recording Industry Association of New Zealand managing director Chris Caddick said it had been a big night for recognising local talent of all ages.
''Every year the awards deliver great New Zealand tunes and provide a benchmark for both the industry and music consumers to gauge how we are performing. What's really pleasing is to see the succession of young musicians very much making their marks.''

Haha stephen #92 your analysis was spot on!!! Ive heard stories about him in other circumstances and he is the same as potrayed at the awards. I find it funny how he offers no remorse of his actions, and that the band are the ones copping it and having to back track by repeatedly upadting their twitter and facebook with how "grateful" they are.
The te reo Maori music award is not rascist. It's open to all musicians, regardless of where they are from. The award is for music which features the use of te reo Maori. Maori language is a unique and distiniguishing sound of New Zealand and its music.
if #66 would like to see a European New Zealander award then perhaps you could list the distinctive musical features pertaining to this category?
(btw, it already exists in the form of every other category selected for the NEW ZEALAND music awards...duh)
On a side note, can we all please cheer up. The winner/losers possess no ill effect towards our quality of life (unless of course you have no life). Lets all go watch reruns of shortland street and forget about it.
Theres something cringe-making about this all this underwhelming 'kiwi talent' - I think the Eurovision Contest springs to mind.........
What a farce. Brooke Fraser won highest selling NZ album, highest selling NZ single and Peoples Choice... so clearly should have also won best album of the year, best single of the year and best female solo artist. I smell some political correctness here. Probably a need to share the awards around rather than just award to the most deserving.
john #88 Ah yeah i meant Alternative, they won best Alternative band.. I didn't agree with that.
Where is KIMBRA in all this ???? She is outstanding !!!!
That naked and famous dude is a classic "image hipster". I've seen so many of them in corners of Auckland parties sneering at the rest of the room that I can pick one anywhere. They love to use "intelligent" terminology and "big" words to make themselves sound well-read, witty, and "above it all".
Image hipsters get half their information on "elitist topics" such as French new wave cinema and 1960s art-rock from Wikipedia. They will rattle off the odd factoid about an "ism" or a period of music but once you start entering into an indepth conversation on the aforementioned subject matter they either changes topics or kill the conversation with a snarky shrug.
It's nothing more than a tired shell. Nothing new here. Just another arrogant attention-seeking little boy dressing up like mummy and waxing lyrical over top of his supposed comrades.
The irony is that there are so many image hipsters, that they have become yet another large flock of sheep. You know, the very thing they apparently detest.
Beastwars should have won best rock album, I love Shihad, but the BeastWars album was amazing.
Then again this is an industry awards ceremony and Beastwars are independant
Fantastic!! I was out last night and missed the awards. Glad they're repeating them this Saturday night. After reading all these comments (BTW LMAO) I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing what a total mess it's going to be. Kudos to you ppl :)

I gave away my VIP ticket to go to these awards because of the lack of representation of all music types and upcoming talent of which there is heaps...and comments are right -it is a chart base, major label run marketing awards, not NZ music awards and the name should be changed...also drunk musician fest is not fun...and there's never any food...classy...
Its a charts awards....snoreee...if it was a real NZ music awards, bands like Katchafire should have won the roots category, they are one of the ONLY bands who are full time musicians, touring the world and releasing number 1 hits world wide and paving the way for NZ music on a global scale.
