Wanderlust - think yoga, meditation, food, fun and music - is in its second year in New Zealand.

People tall and small, supple and stiff flocked to Taupo for an escape into the world of Wanderlust on Waitangi weekend.

The festival, on from Thursday to Sunday, gave around 3000 attendees their choice of 45 yoga classes, 10 meditation sessions and 25 mindful living workshops.

For admin worker Danielle West, from Auckland, trying slack-lining, meditation and blindfold yoga was a chance to be taught in different disciplines.

"I do [yoga] now, but I want to learn more about different practices. We're trying to do a bit of everything," she said.

Her partner, a heavy diesel technician, was using the festival as an introduction, she said.

American yoga superstar Shiva Rea - the most famous yoga teacher at the festival - said the attendees at Taupo had been a delight.

"I was amazed from the very first class how warm, open and really centred [people were] - noticeably different than in the States, I have to say."

Rea was excited to be in New Zealand, especially since her visit coincided with Waitangi Day.

"I've always wanted to come here because of Maori culture and because New Zealand is really a beacon for the world," she said.

Festival organiser Jonnie Halstead said the mindful living movement had outgrown old hippie stereotypes.

"What we're doing is slightly different in that we're catering to an audience who are not on the fringe of urban society - they are the urban society.  They live busy lives in Wellington or downtown Auckland - they're mums or dads or whatever - and this gives them the chance for four days of the year to do something where they'll leave transformed."

Yoga teacher Honza Lafond said yoga can be a roadmap for people.

"We have our moments of happiness and moments of fulfilment, but I think for the most part there is a sense of being lost and being in a world of chaos, in a way," he said.

"There's the idea of proecting yourself, and there's a lot of risk out there, and that sort of notion of you have to be lucky to have a good life - you have to be smart and pretty, and all that stuff.  Yoga, at its basis, shows the way that that's actually not true, and you can create a happy life for yourself."
