Kanye West
Where: TSB Arena, Wellington
When: Tuesday, December 2

Kanye West made his name as a producer to the stars, sampling old soul records to give shiny new hip-hop-influenced pop music a different feel.

From there, he ventured out under his own name and just last week put out his fourth album, 808s & Heartbreak, which ditches the hip-hop genre to focus on the Cher-meets-Daft Punk sound of heavily Vocoder-drenched vocals Auto-Tuned to provide a robotic slur in place of bad notes.

It is obnoxious when used sparingly and, over the course of an album, is close to unbearable.

West's show sees him dipping back to the catchy hip-hop delights from earlier albums; it is not enough. And his decision to "sing" with his robot-microphone and take time to lambast the video editors into focusing only on his good side, tell the band how to play the numbers and announce to the audience when certain songs are very good (being schooled in rap, he uses the adjective that rhymes with trucking) does not endear him.

At one point he stumbles through a long diary-like spiel about how, if he is done with hip-hop, so be it. He tells reviewers that they don't know anything unless they have played or produced.

And his defensiveness is neither catchy nor interesting.

The sermons might have been lapped up by a few, since this was the church of Kanye he was preaching at, but really, you have to wonder who he thinks he is fooling.

The decision to focus on a crowd schooled on radio-ready pop music sees West oversell his product, which means he is underselling his art.

The stumbling start ruined what could have been an exciting, dynamic show. History will remember Kanye West as nothing more than Puff Daddy Version 2.0.

Nasir Jones, who records under the moniker NaS, delivered a passionate set, proving that hip-hop, when taken seriously and performed with flair, can be an art form; more than just posturing and bluster.

Black President must feel good for NaS to sing now; it was released earlier this year announcing Barack Obama as America's next president well before the election.

But NaS took a trip back to his classic early-1990s album, Illmatic, a lean, mean rarity in the rap canon; a near-perfect album and it still sounds vital and real.

sack the reviewer! Obviously you were hired to speculate and write a negative review. Shame on you for missing out on an awesome show! Kanye's "diary like" monologue was probably the highlight of that concert for me personally! he spoke with his heart on his sleeve and I felt like he really reached out.

Clearly Mr. West is suffering emotionally & the performance of his new songs just humanised the experience for the audience! he's suffered great loss over the last year- His mum & his fiance but his show must go on for us!

loved it.

Seriously what show did you go to! Haters shouldn't be posting reviews! 'Diddy 2.0'! please. Your review is very inaccurate and 18 of the 20 people i went with thought it was an awesome perfomance, far better than any hip hop artist i have seen thus far! Understand the art then do a review.

I personally think the reviewer couldn't be more wrong I flew from Christchurch to see 2 of my favourite hip hop artists and was far! from disapointed, only had to take one look at the crowd to see they were feeling the vibe when we threw our diamonds in the sky..

Id agree with Mr Sweatman' that the 808 album isnt his best AND the long winded spiel was slightly boring but after what hes been through c'mon..

Nas was off the hook, loved the Illmatic songs and his band was good too, bass guitar in the 'Hip Hop Is Dead' song.. Minta

Good performance all up 9/10 done, call me the reviewer.

It was the same in Melbourne, Kanye going off on 5 minute tangets about people hating him, bagging his backing band and drrrrrraaaaaanggggging out his songs with the voice auto tuner. I had mad respect before, all seems lost in his last rant filled show.

Kanye is Kanye. While you might think the show was not an amazing blend of Hiphop and theatrics who cares? The show was banging, Kanye lived upto the hype and like Jeff said. You have to expect the gospel from Kanye because he is that good. Also Kanye was saying that he can do what he wants not that he was leaving Hiphop alone. He is hiphop right now. Just look at the songs he did like Swagger like us and American boy. Those are classic Kanye and songs that just recently came out. If you don't know Kanyes work why are you the one Doing the concert Review. Look at the sales of T-Shirts and CD's and tell me the show wasn't a success. THis is the Music Business after all. Good time had by most I'd say.

Keep Keeping everyone on there toes Kanye!! Come back anytime.

Just my opinion though everyone can think whatever they like I ain't trying to Hate just Educate!!

Really enjoyed the concert - but thought Kanye could have connected more with the crowd :)

I wasn't at the Welly show, but watched Kayne open for U2 in Auckland a couple of years back. I was looking forward to it, but in the end thought he was seriously overrated and disappointed that much of his "music" like much of the 21st century is just badly ripped versions of other music pioneers (Daft Punk as an example).

Maybe he's evolved since earlier times, but the latest generation of hiphop has nothing on the real trail blazers in the rap world like Public Enemy. Forget the ego guys.

Never mind the haters form the 09 (auckland) Welli showed Nas & Kanye we are the capital of NZ Hiphop.

Nas is the man, out did Kanye west who was good aswell, though didnt have the feel of a real Hiphop MC and was not compairable to the Smoked out tour where it had 3 times the atmosphere.

Either way was worth it to see Nas and Kanye West in Wellihood.

Peace out
