Kiwi singing stars Kimbra and Gin Wigmore have missed out on MTV's EMA awards.

The pair were running against three other artists in the first round of voting to represent New Zealand/Australia in the worldwide category.

Voters picked Australia's Gotye, who shot to international stardom thanks to his single, Somebody That I Used to Know, which he sang with Kimbra.

The song was No 1 on iTunes charts in 46 countries, and the official video is YouTube's 17th most viewed video of all time.

Gotye now has to compete against Asia's winner, Han Geng, to represent the Asia-Pacific region.

The winner, to be announced on October 30, will then stand against other regional winners from Europe, Latin America, North America and Africa/India/Middle East at the show.

Rihanna and Taylor Swift are the artists to beat at the awards, with six and five nominations, respectively.

Teen star Justin Bieber and Katy Perry are up for four EMA awards each, including Best Pop and Biggest Fans.

Jay-Z, Kanye West, Green Day and One Direction were among the other nominees.

The awards will be held on November 12 in Frankfurt.
