Stuff has partnered with NZ On Screen to bring you this Before They Were Famous spot every Wednesday. Today's choice is someone who was famous so young you'll recognise her instantly, but you might like to hear her 12-year-old singing voice.

Before you could call her Queen Bee and Royals was a Grammy-winning smash hit, Lorde (Ella Yelich-O'Connor) was a singer in Extreme and competing in the covers category of the 2009 Intermediate Schools Battle of the Bands Finals.

The 12-year-old Belmont Intermediate student and her band channel Led Zeppelin and belt out covers of Man on a Silver Mountain by Rainbow, as well as Edie (Ciao Baby), The Cult's tribute to Andy Warhol heroine Edie Sedgwick.

Post-performance Ella bemoans a "sore voice" but Extreme take third place.
