Auckland musician Emma G has been honoured for inspiring others.
The 23-year-old Static Era singer, who has a condition called hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid inside the skull that leads to brain swelling, is a New Zealander of The Year Awards Local Heroes recipient.
"I found it a bit overwhelming, I guess because I don't really see myself as that," Ghaemmaghamy says.
"I simply do what I do, teaching people and helping people to achieve all they can is something I love doing. And making music as a means to express myself and share emotions and experiences with people is something that means the world to me.
"Luckily people seem to enjoy it! And if I can inspire them to battle on through their own hardships, stay positive and do something with their lives, then brilliant!"
As a result of her condition, Ghaemmaghamy has a shunt - a tube draining the water out from her head. She has had 23 operation including brain surgery.
The overall winner will be announced next month.
"I'll find out whether or not I'm considered in the top 10 of New Zealand later this month," Ghaemmaghamy says.
"I'm not really worried.. I'm just stoked to be recognized as someone who is giving back to a community that has already given me so much!"
