Hip-hop star Frank Ocean was busted with marijuana on New Year's Eve, and ended up having his driver's license taken off him.

The Mono County Sheriff's Office in California said Ocean was pulled over for speeding in his black BMW, when police smelled the scent of marijuana coming from his vehicle.

The sheriff's office said Ocean, whose debut studio album Channel Orange won critical acclaim last year, was driving at excessive speed.

He was cited for possession of marijuana and released.

He was also reportedly driving on a suspended licence.
