Has Australia’s original international pop princess really hung up her microphone?

The twittersphere breathed a collective "phew" yesterday when Kylie Minogue’s official Twtter account posted a mysteriously brief response to reports out of the UK that she was set to retire from singing to focus on an acting career after splitting from her long-time manager, Terry Blamey.

"#lovers #notquitting", a one line tweet from @kylieminogue said, followed by tiny icons of a love heart, followed by a microphone, a movie camera and a bright red lipstick print. Translation: I love music, I love film, I love youse all.

At least that’s the way many read the tweet.The twitter response was immediate, effusive and unanimous: "Thanx God!!!!" said one. "Phew! I LOVE YOU KYLIE x" said another.

The news sent shockwaves across Twitter yesterday afternoon, with some questioning the wisdom off such a decision.

After all, it didn’t work for Madonna, and even Justine Timberlake has gone back to music. So why would Kylie be any different?

Back on Twitter, American Jared Braden, who runs pop website Allure of Sound, said what many were thinking: "I figured that!"

But until we hear from the singing budgie herself, the pop world waits with bated breath.
