Hollywood comedian Jack Black and his long-suffering musical sidekick are heading back to New Zealand for three shows in May.

Tenacious D were last seen supporting the Foo Fighters at Western Springs in 2011, but this will be Black and Kyle Glass' own headline tour.

With hits including Tribute and a Grammy nomination for their third - and latest - album, Rize of the Fenix, the duo will visit theatres in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Black is no stranger to New Zealand, spending time here during the filming of Sir Peter Jackson's King Kong.
